Synopsis
Yukito Urabe is in a ceremony to take over his father's cult under the pretense that the all-powerful god Mitama will appear to save him. However, as the ceremony ends with him drowning, he seeks to be reborn in a place devoid of religion or gods. Returning to a wholly different, non-spiritual world. He meets a rebellious young lady named Aruaru, who shows him about her hamlet. His idealistic view of this society, however, is quickly crushed after he witnesses a public group suicide and learns about the nation's end-of-life system, which allows the government to mandate the death of any citizen at any time. Soon after, Aruaru and her sister are abducted for execution against their will, forcing Yukito to attempt to save them but to no effect. In a moment of despair, Yukito thinks back to his father's lessons and prays to Mitama to save them. A young girl appears to his cry as she falls from the skies and kills everyone who hurt Yukito and his comrades. She calls herself Mitama!
