Synopsis
Now that fire is not the center of human civilization, it is feared instead. Human biology has been altered by many wars, and as a result, humans now spontaneously combust when they are near a source of natural flame. A new source of energy, however, keeps society from completely collapsing. It is a stone-shaped substance that is contained within the bodies of monsters that infest many forests and is utilized to produce light and steam. Fire hunters are those tasked with gathering this priceless resource. Young villager Touko is rescued from a forest monster by a fire hunter who dies in the course of his valiant deed. The girl's family sends her to the capital to deliver Kanata and the hunter's fire sickle to his kin once the hunter's dog, Kanata, recovers from his own wound.
