Ritsuko is Misato’s long time friend and the head scientist of Nerv. She’s key to the operation of the Evangelions and the Magi supercomputers that operate Tokyo 3. Ritsuko commands with an iron fist but still finds a confidant are Misato and her assistant Maya even though she continues to keep her personal endeavors to herself burring herself in work, smoking, and her affinity for cats. Despite Ritsuko and Misato’s close bond they share different ethical beliefs which often cause them to clash during battles.
Rei Ayanami is the pilot of the prototype model Evangelion Unit 00. She was the first child selected as part of the Evangelion project and most of her past is unknown. She is socially withdrawn and only shows emotions towards Gendo Ikari who looks after her. When Gendo's son Shinji is selected as the Third Child he seeks to befriend Ayanami and yearns to have the same relationship Ayanami has with his father but she is not the type to open up to others easily. Along with her many mysteries her connections to the Human Instrumentality Project continue to be unknown.
Due to his deep connections to Seele and the second impact Gendo worked his way up to being the commander of Nerv. He’s the father of Shinji, the third child, and looks after the welfare of Rei Ayanami. Gendo is often seen as being a ruthless tyrannical willing to do anything to achieve his goals, even if it means sacrificing the Eva pilots. Behind his cut throat rule he is a brilliant scientist who suffers from his past but still has a soft side deep down which he very rarely shows. Shinji seeks out his father’s acceptance despite Gendo leaving him in the care of his teacher for years and rarely speaking to him.
At the early age of four Shinji was left in the care of his teacher so that his father could focus on the Evangelion project. Without his father and the death of his mother at an early age Shinji has developed a low self-esteem and abandonment issues. His presence would soon be needed at the age of fourteen when his father sends him a letter and a Nerv ID card requesting him to come to Tokyo-3 to join the Evangelion Project. Shinji is forced to deal with his past as he moves forward to become the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01.
Kaji’s works as a special inspector for Nerv but at the same time keeps his true agendas a secret as he works as a liaison for several government agencies. He acts as the father figure to both Shinji and Asuka and also has had a romantic past with Misato back when they were in college. Often times Kaji can appear to be easygoing and a bit immature, but can be very liable during times of emergency. Asides from his work he tends to have a bit of a green thumb.
After Shinji’s arrival at Nerv Misato takes on the task of being his legal guardian. She is also Shinji’s superior and ranked as captain. Unlike her diligent work ethic Misato’s home life is completely disarray with an apartment covered in cluttered and beer. Misato is an expert when it comes to commanding the Evangelions and battle tactics often times being forced to make tough decisions. Despite her outgoing personality she struggles with her devastating childhood and empathizes with Shinji’s own struggles with his father on a personal level.
Pen Pen was rescued by Misato after being part of genetic experiments in which he otherwise would have been put to death. He is a warm-water penguin and has retractable claws in which no other bird species possesses leading to believe that Pen Pen is a new species created by genetic experiments. He has an extremely high intellect compared to other animals and is often seen watching TV or reading newspapers.
Asuka was born and raised in Germany but moves to America with her father at a young age. She is selected as an Eva pilot and quickly becomes a childhood prodigy obtaining a university degree at a young age. Despite her high intelligence she still has difficulties with kanji and takes classes along with the other pilots. Asuka is determined to be the best of the best which she shows as a pilot by maintaining a high sync ratio with Unit 02, the first true Evangelion.
